Every year when we receive our reader’s choice survey results, we are told that the Lookalike Contest is one of your favorite features. And we like playing favorites! Participate in this year’s contest by sending in your entries now. The deadline is June 15, 2012 and winners will appear in our September/October issue.

Here are the details:

Nominees must be residents of Utah Valley. Previous winners are not eligible for the 2012 contest.

Please email editor@uvmag.com and include the following:
1. Individual’s name (AKA Lookalike)
2. Contact info for lookalike (email/phone)
3. Name of famous person he/she resembles
4. Nominator’s name
5. Please include a photo

You can also bring in a photo and the entry form from our magazine to our office at 424 W. 800 N. Ste 201 in Orem.

Need some help figuring out who your lookalike is? Try uploading your photo to myheritage.com for some ideas. But take their suggestions with a grain of salt, because the lookalike generator might just tell you that you look like an 85-year-old man when you are actually a 25-year-old woman. Not that we know from personal experience or anything — actually, that is exactly what we mean.

Here are some tips to make your lookalike entry shine.

1. Whenever possible, provide a quality photo. Small or blurry photos make it hard for our team to decipher how closely you resemble Tom Cruise. Not sure if it is ‘good photo’? Ask your amateur photographer friends for their opinion.

2. Provide a recent photo. If you are selected as a winner, you will be photographed professionally for the magazine. If the photo you submitted was taken 10 years ago and you’ve dyed your hair, things can get complicated.

3. Tell us about any other similarities you share with your lookalike. Those fun details can help your submission stand out from the stack.

4. Don’t discount local celebrities. We give people like Dave Rose celebrity status around here. Check out his lookalike from last year here. Can we get a Stephen Covey? Or Jimmer? It’s up to you!

5. Please provide us with multiple forms of current contact information. It’s hard to tell you that you are winner if we have the wrong email address or your voicemail inbox is full (you know who you are).

Holly Mendenhall, our May/June cover girl, knows what she is doing in the kitchen. One of her favorite meals to fix at home is Meatball Alphabet Soup. Test it out and read our feature on Holly here while your soup simmers. Bon Appetit!

Meatball Alphabet Soup by Holly Mendenhall

Meatballs
1/2 cup dried bread crumbs
1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
2 T onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
2 T fresh parsley, minced
2 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 pound ground beef

Soup
2 T olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 celery rib, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
5 cups chicken stock
1 (14oz) can crushed tomatoes in puree
1 tsp. Italian seasoning (or oregano and basil)
1/2 tsp. salt
Pepper to taste
1/2 cup alphabet pasta, dry

Meatballs
Combine bread crumbs, cheese, onion, garlic, herbs & spices in a large mixing bowl. Use a fork to mix in the egg, then add the ground beef. Mix well with your hands. Shape the mixture into 1-inch balls. Heat skillet coated with cooking spray or small amount of oil. Place the meatballs in the skillet and cook them over med-low heat for 8-10 minutes, turning them often so they brown evenly, until the centers are only slightly pink.

Soup
Heat oil in large saucepan or soup pot. Add onion, celery and garlic. Partially cover pan and cook vegetables over moderate heat for 8-10 minutes. Add chicken stock, crushed tomatoes and spices. Bring soup to a simmer over med-low heat, then add pasta. Keep at a gentle simmer until pasta is almost cooked, then transfer meatballs to pot. Simmer for 3 minutes to finish cooking meatballs.

Before each issue goes to print, we send it through a few rounds of editing to pick up on typos, misspelled names, wonky graphics, etc. We use the spell check function in Indesign first, and then we follow up with a “proofing party” in the conference room. And it’s true — just as your eighth-grade English teacher warned you — spell check doesn’t catch everything. Human eyes don’t catch everything either.

Each of our editors can share a few greatest hits in the mistake department. One of my least favorite mistakes was when I listed one of our lookalike’s grandmothers as his mother, and by extension pronouncing her married to her son. But we subscribe to the ‘you live and you learn’ motto around here. And we will continue to make the same goal, every year, to spend more time proofing our pages.
